ARNO TALKS 2019: Cultural review of the city-river (FI)

The series of cultural events related to the city theme ARNO TALKS took place in the splendid setting of the new space of Habana 500, Florence. Five events of the review, organized by Urban LIFE, which saw the involvement of experts, public administrators, technicians and participants in debates, seminars but above all experiential activities related to the livability and rediscovery of the Arno.

CoN.MARRADI: Urban connections for a more attractive and sustainable place

The project includes a series of interventions on public spaces and external connections with the aim of creating a system of connected, easily accessible, accessible, green and inclusive places, improving both the potential of each individual space and the overall attractiveness of the territory. The project has obtained the co-financing of over 200,000 euros from the Tuscany Region through the funds for urban regeneration in favor of the Municipalities falling in the “Inner Areas” of Tuscany (2019-2021) after participating in the competition notice and selecting the Marradi’s proposal for the quality of the interventions.

CALL FOR ACTIVE SPACES 2018: Regeneration of the Dominican Court, Marradi (Florence)

The project, created for the 2018 “Active Spaces Call” of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze (from which it obtained a funding of over 15,000 euros), envisages the regeneration of the internal courtyard of the “Dino Campana Cultural Center” in Marradi, in a context of strong historical value.

The project aims to redevelop the court:

  • providing interventions of safety, maintenance, change of the pavement, new urban furniture, protection from the sun and supply of useful elements for the realization of cultural activities;
  • reactivating it from a functional point of view, proposing a program of events organized thanks to the collaboration between the cultural subjects of the Dino Campana Center and the public administration.

STUDY AREA FRAMEWORK: Ikea Scandicci village

Pre-feasibility study of the transformation area TR04c_bis of the Municipality of Scandicci (Florence) – strategically connected to the tramway line T1 and close to urban centers, public services (schools, urban centers, advanced training workshops) and areas with high environmental value (presence of the Parco dell’Acciaiolo) – for the settlement of possible IKEA residential intervention.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND THE CITY: survey on Florence 2018/19

How many international students come to Florence every year? What is the impact of these flows on the city? What are the interactions of academic tourists with Florence and the local population?

The research concerned the census and mapping of as many as 83 bodies in the territory, with interviews with education operators and local administrators, and the administration of anonymous questionnaires to students, to learn about the methods and the type of interaction that takes place between these and the urban context.

The research was presented at MIPIM 2019 (Cannes, France).

AD ARNUM: Strategic masterplan for sustainable mobility along the Arno river

The project was developed by some components of Urban LIFE before the establishment of the company. It is presented on these pages as a significant activity, tackled according to the founding principles of Urban LIFE.

The municipalities of Bagno a Ripoli, Fiesole, Pontassieve and Rignano sull’Arno in 2017 started the “Ad Arnum” Project for the supra-municipal design of a cycle route along the Arno valley as a sustainable mobility strategy. “Ad Arnum” was developed in view of the participation in the European Call “Urban Innovative Actions” 2017 (UIA – 2nd Call), which rewards urban innovative actions based on three themes, including Sustainable Urban Mobility.
The entire project, characterized by a strong participatory footprint, converges in one goal: to radically change the ways of using and crossing the territory, both by local users and by other “users”.

HOPE: Home of People and Equality. Urban regeneration project

A research team of the Department of Architecture (DIDA) of Florence, in collaboration with the municipality of Empoli, has planned a set of urban interventions for the historic centre of Empoli inspired by the idea of an inclusive city, catalyst of urban, economic and environmental regeneration. The project is part of the Urban Innovation Projects of Regione Toscana, supported by the EU’s Structural Funds POR-FESR 2014-2020 for regeneration, and it was selected – through a competitive call – to be financed with 6.1 million euros, in addition to the 2.9 million euros co-financed by the municipality.

FROM SPACES TO PLACES: Urban regeneration scenarios in London’s Lower Lea Valley with the “Space Syntax” method

The project proposes a systemic approach for the regeneration of the urban space of the ex-industrial river valley of Lea Valley in London, United Kingdom, using the masterplanning techniques to coordinate the reuse of different abandoned urban areas with a perspective of regeneration in a multi and trans-scalar.
